Forget Photo ID, HKDL Goes Biometric

Story

Park Update

BiometricHong Kong Disneyland’s Annual Passholders will enjoy even greater convenience when entering the park with the launch of a new Ticket Tag system on 21st November 2006.

Annual Passes are holder-specific with the Guest’s name printed on the back of the ticket and the holder is required to present valid personal identification for verification at the entrance. With the implementation of the new Ticket Tag system, this authentication process will be shortened.

The Ticket Tag system uses biometric technology to link HKDL Annual Passholders with their tickets. It identifies a series of approximately 50 sample points from the surface of a Guest’s finger and immediately creates a unique numerical value based on the distances between those points. That numerical value is recalled for verification when the Annual Passholder uses the ticket at the turnstile.

Ticket Tag devices will be installed on top of the turnstiles and clear instructions will be available alongside. Cast Members will also be on hand to assist Guests when necessary.

Noble Coker, Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, said “The Ticket Tag system is yet another example of Hong Kong Disneyland introducing innovative technologies to enhance our Guests’ experience at the Park. It will be easy to use and will also reduce waiting times for Annual Passholders who will no longer need to present photo identification to verify their tickets.

“The system will also protect Annual Passholders from anyone using their lost or stolen tickets and will be strong deterrent against ticket fraud.”

The sample points collected from a Guest’s finger will be encrypted and formatted to be usable only for verifying the ticket holder. No fingerprint image information will be stored, transmitted or saved. Sample points do not contain sufficient information to recreate a fingerprint image.

The system will be launched in phases - initially at two turnstiles and eventually extended to cover all turnstiles in the Park.

While Annual Passholders are welcome to experience this added convenience, they can also continue to present a photo ID at the turnstile for authentication if they prefer.
