NB: This is a press release posted here by a fan in a hotel room in New York City. Said fan will be in HKDL next week!
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Green Power today jointly unveiled five Nature Trails to bring members of the public closer to the nature, thanks to the Resort’s wide variety of trees and butterflies. They also launched “Nature Walk at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort - Nature Trails Guidebook” to help visitors navigate the trails and identify the trees and butterflies that can be found along their walks.
Situated at Hong Kong Disneyland’s Adventureland, Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, Park Promenade and Inspiration Lake, the five specially designed nature trails combine tree and butterfly watching and feature 88 tree and 35 butterfly species. The Adventureland trail is the only trail that requires Park ticket entry. Through the Guidebook, readers will learn the interesting characteristics of these trees and butterflies, and appreciate the intimate relationship between trees, butterflies and humans. The Guidebook also comes with user-friendly maps and is provided free of charge to all secondary and primary schools, and public libraries in Hong Kong.
The book launch ceremony today was officiated by B.C. Lo, Vice President, Public Affairs of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, and Dr. Man Chi-sum, Chief Executive Officer, Green Power., and attended by more than 100 teachers and members of Teacher-Parent Associations. The teachers and parents also joined guided tours provided by Green Power to learn how to conduct the tour for themselves and their students and children.
Dr. Man said, “The Guidebook is an informative booklet featuring many colourful pictures of the several dozens species of butterflies and trees in the Resort, its hotels and Inspiration Lake. It is a wonderful tool for visitors to the trails as they appreciate the various butterflies and trees in the Resort area. The Hong Kong Disneyland Resort is easily accessible by public transport. The five nature trails provide an ideal setting for teachers and parents to educate our younger generation about the nature in an outdoor environment.”
Lo remarked, “In addition to the magical experience the Resort creates for Guests, the five Nature Trails we introduced today will further enrich Guests’ experience and provide easily-accessible trekking trails for members of the public to enjoy nature. The Nature Trail Guidebook is a perfect companion for visitors to better appreciate the wide variety of trees and butterflies and explore the rich natural resources in and around the Resort.”
Matthew Sin, Associate Manager of Environmental Affairs of Green Power, said “Disneyland is located on Lantau Island, a butterfly hotspot. The vegetation inside the Resort is abundant, making it a perfect destination for butterflies in their search not only for food, but for a habitat and an environment for reproduction. With careful attention and observation, one can find various butterfly species, including some rare ones .” He added that butterflies are closely related to trees: butterflies help pollinate flowers while trees provide for the needs of butterflies – their flowers contain nectar for butterflies; the leaves provide shelter as well as food for the larvae.
During today’s guided tours, which were led by Disney VoluntEARS and Green Power, the teachers and parents explored the nature trails, discovering fun facts about the trees and butterflies there. They found that several White Jade Orchid Tree flowers were blooming along the Hong Kong Disneyland Nature Trails, the strong fragrance from the flowers not only attracted the attention of visitors but also, butterflies. The White Jade Orchid Tree is food for the larvae of Common Jay and Tailed Jay, and these two butterfly species are often spotted in the area. Common Jay and Tailed Jay are eye-catching with a large bodies and bright bluish green patterns. Not far away is another tree with a special name – Hurricane Palm, which earns its name for its ability to resist storms, and has irregular leaf scars on its trunk. Beside the palm is a bush where another butterfly species can be found - Punchinello, which has white dots and a wavy margin on its wings. The butterfly prefers to take shelter in shady grasses, with its wings half open and half closed like a clam, hence its Chinese name.
