After a car derailing on Saturday, Hong Kong Disneyland have been forced to shut down Autopia pending further investigations.
Update: Unconfirmed reports state the ride has now been checked and re-opened for business.
According to several news sources, Hong Kong Disneyland was forced to shut down the popular Autopia attraction after one of the cars came off the set track. Here is an extract from the CNN news story:
Hong Kong Disneyland on Saturday shut its Autopia driving ride after one of its vehicles derailed from a fixed track, a spokeswoman said Saturday.
Park spokeswoman Glendy Chu said the accident occurred when the driver, a young woman, hit one of the barricades surrounding the track. She said the woman was not injured.
Chu said the Hong Kong government's Electrical and Mechanical Services Department ordered the electric car ride shut for inspections. Government spokesman Raymond Wong said government investigators have not reported back their findings.
While this may not be news to some, as many have commented that the Autopia attraction has always been a bit 'buggy', this is the first time that the government has intervened and shut down one of the attractions at Hong Kong Disneyland for safety reasons. With a 57% shareholder stake in the park, the Hong Kong SAR Government are undoubtedly engaging in a swift move known as 'covering themselves'.
This is a big blow to the park, who has been suffering from perception problems in the popular press since day one. Readers may also recall an incident at the nearby Ngong Ping 360 Skyrail earlier this year, in which the cable car to the Lantau Island was shut down due to a cable car detaching and falling to the ground.
No word has been given on when the government investigators are expected to finish their investigations or when the ride will re-open.
