The Disney Workers Union in Hong Kong and Disneyland management plan a joint training initiative.
It will be based on a government initiative and will help Disney employees in Hong Kong to learn English, useful in dealing with the 20% of visitors who currently come from outside the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Mainland China.
This emerged following a meeting on 11 June between a UNI group and Disney’s Director of Human resources Greg Morley and Director of External Affairs Katherine Wang.
UNI Deputy General Secretary Philip Bowyer and UNI-Asia Pacific Secretary Christopher Ng led the UNI team of Hong Kong and UNI colleagues.
Following the discussion the UNI-backed Disney Workers Union will be making a formal request for organising access to workers and for the right to represent members in disciplinary and grievance procedures.
The company has said it is friendly to unions and is being pressed to adhere to International Labour Organisation standards - which include the rights to join unions and to bargain collectively.
